Few creatures have earned so great a reputation as companions of the Devil, than the Black Dog. In fact, canines in general, from hell hounds to spectral wolves, are considered loyal servants of darkness.

Black dogs have long been summoned by witches to protect the perimeter of their sacred circles and chase away prying eyes. Black dogs have also become something of a global legend, haunting darkened roads and desolate places. Spectral wolves have been spotted on lonely highways at night only to evaporate in the headlights just before being run over.

Of course, we also have to include werewolves in the category of cursed canines: the person under a curse who transforms from human to beast under the Full Moon's light.

One of the oldest associations of the Black Dog with the powers of darkness is found in the lore of the Greek Goddess, Hekate. Black dogs were so sacred to her that they are frequently depicted flanking her on either side and she is sometimes even depicted as a maiden with three dog heads. This, of course, reminds us of the original hell-hound, the triple headed guard dog of the infernal gates of Hades, Cerberus.
