Another reason for the rabbit's association with "evil" is the ancient symbolism of fertility it lent to the goddess Ishtar. The rabbits and eggs of the Church's Easter are nothing short of borrowed sex symbols from the temples of a far older cult than Jesus. The name "Easter" is even a derivative of the goddess's name, "Ishtar."

The hare's nervous nature has also earned it the dubious honor of being a totem of fear in some indigenous American cultures.

The Egyptian Goddess of the Underworld, Weynet, had the head of a hare and guarded the way between life and death.
