Bat has long held its devilish title as king of the night, due, obviously, to its nocturnal nature, but also to its relation to all things dark and scary! Bat's persistent appearance in Halloween decorum and on heavy metal album covers has made it something of an evil celebrity by the company it keeps.

Probably, nowhere is this more evident than in vampire lore! Our direct association between Bat and the Prince of Darkness stems from the most famous vampire turning into a bat. Dracula, whose name means "Son of the Dragon," or "Son of Satan," (“He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years." - Revelation 20:2).

In Mayan myth, the god of sacrifice, night and death, Camazots, (meaning "death bat") is an Underworld deity.

However, bat is not always considered "evil": another mayan bat god of death, Tzinican, ("the Bat God") has the power to heal any type of sickness. The Baikari people of Brazil worshipped a bat goddess named Evaki who ruled the realm of night, sleep and dreams.

The work of bats in the physical realm is certainly beneficial to humans. One of our most adversarial pests is top on the menu for bats: mosquitoes!
